High-Performance Online Gas Analysis for Industry and Research

Our fully developed process mass spectrometers are used in an exceptionally wide range of areas and applications in both industry and research. The gas analysis systems from InProcess Instruments are the state of the art response to the challenges of modern online process analysis. The rapid multi-component analysis supports the automated availability of process-relevant parameters, and thus increases system safety levels, improves overall product quality as well as provides excellent potential for savings in terms of time, energy and costs.

The universal analytical possibilities inherent in mass spectrometric online gas analysis also enable wide-ranging use of our systems in research, process development and special applications.

Glass

In glass manufacturing, the analysis of minute gas inclusions within the glass poses a special kind of challenge.
The task here is to extract minute gas volumes with high accuracy and repeatability from glass samples and to analyze these gases and their components.

The mass spectrometers in the GIA series can be used for the analysis of minute gas bubbles with volumes of just a few nanoliters.
Both concentration and partial pressures of individual components in the gas inclusion volume can be precisely determined.

Metallurgy

Blast furnaces - Converters - Electric furnaces

Mass spectrometric online gas analysis enables rapid and exact determination of the main components carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and argon. Mass spectrometers can be used as versatile multi-component analyzers in many areas: in blast furnaces, steelworks and many other areas of metallurgy.

The great accuracy of a mass spectrometer and the simultaneous, fast determination of almost all gas components provide significantly better analysis results compared to conventional analytical techniques.
Improved dynamic process control leads to higher product quality and system security, as well as savings in time and energy. These advantages guarantee shorter amortization cycles. The IPI device technology also guarantees automatic measurement and calibration, high stability, almost 100% availability, simple operation and low maintenance outlay.

Chemistry

In online process analysis, mass spectrometers are always used in the chemical industry, whenever rapid and simultaneous results for several components are essential. The flexibility of this measurement method excels in process development or in the monitoring of air pollutants. In process optimization and monitoring, critical components over wide concentration ranges can be securely detected. The use of mass spectrometric gas analysis systems can therefore save time and costs, improve product quality and increase system security.

Biotechnology

Mass spectrometric gas analysis provides information on metabolic processes in bioreactors, supporting process control in fermentation systems

Online gas analysis in bio-processes provides a valuable addition to process parameters in the liquid phase, which can be determined with relatively simple physical and physicochemical sensors. This additional information about the precise composition of the gas phase provides, with the assistance of various calculation and system models, a greater insight into biological states and the dynamics of the growth and living conditions for microorganism populations.

Mass spectrometric gas analysis direct and online at the system also offers a wide variety of diagnostic information options for scientists, engineers and operating personnel of bioreactors in technical centers and in production. This includes targeted control of bioprocesses in fermentative production, improvement of productivity, optimization and development of new processes and the evaluation of off-specification batches.

Electronic

Analysis of gas fillings in electronic devices

InProcess Instruments has developed an MS series for the special requirements of the electronic device industry aimed at the analysis of the filling gas and in particular its humidity in hermetically sealed electronic components.

The EDA series is developed considering the specific customer applications, taking into account if the application area lies in the research and development or it is focused at the production process or it is rather in production monitoring and quality management.

The mass spectrometric analysis, together with the specially developed technology and evaluation software from InProcess Instruments, enables the determination of both concentrations and the partial pressures of the gas species. All main components of the filling gases together with the minor components and impurities, except humidity, are determined up from the sub-ppm range, the humidity detection limit is less than 100 ppm.

The analysis systems are available with the customised sample holders, breaking chambers, gas entries as well as the customised heating of the sampling lines.

Pharmacy

Batch processes predominate in pharmaceutical production. Online process analysis for optimization and monitoring can also be applied profitably here. The flexibility of mass spectrometry is particularly obvious when used in process development, monitoring of pollutants in exhaust or ambient air in ventilations systems and buildings. In process optimization and monitoring, critical components over wide concentration ranges can be securely detected. The use of mass spectrometric gas analysis systems can therefore save time and costs, improve product quality and increase system security.

Research

Mass spectrometers are universal analysis devices with high selectivity. The measurement principle enables the determination of numerous components in all types of gas mixtures. The application range for this technique is correspondingly high. We also develop systems for special applications with the know-how of our technicians, engineers and scientists.

Mass spectrometry offers special analytical skills for research and laboratory analysis. The high time resolution enables investigations of rapidly changing gas compositions. The measurement principle allows the determination of isotope ratios of stable isotopes for the evaluation of tracer experiments. Even difficult separation tasks, such as the quantification of Helium and Deuterium in a mixture, are possible with the InProcess Instruments devices.

Pure Gas

Online mass spectrometers are ideally suited for the continuous quality control of ultrapure gas and gas mixture compositions. The simultaneous determination of several trace components is as easy as the precise monitoring of exact gas compositions. The high measurement speed enables automatic control of numerous sample lines with just one device. The reliability of the analysis is ensured by automatic calibration and measurement procedures. Numerous application options can also be found in the analysis of special gas mixtures.

Examples:

  • Quality Control of Ultrapure Gases and Gas Mixtures
  • Checking Calibration Gases
  • Analysis of Special Gas Mixtures
  • Analysis of Noble Gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe)
  • Analysis of Stable Isotopes in Gases
